It seems that some members may have forgotten, or mis-understood the rules regarding how to conduct themselves in chat and Private Messages.

So here is a brief reminder :)

Do NOT promote - this refers to any promoting, be it for a Team, a site, a program, whatever. If a member has not asked you for information, do not go out of your way to provide it. ie do not say something like "I just earned $20 from wonderpay"
Do NOT incite or encourage a member to ask you for information as a means of getting around the above - ie do not say something like "I just earned from a great site"
Do NOT use bad or inappropriate language - this is a family site and we do have minors as members.
Do NOT harass other members - eg If a member does not answer a question, do not repeat it until they respond.
Do NOT make accusations or air grievances with another member - if you feel you have a complaint or issue with another member send a support ticket. We DO investigate all such complaints, and will take appropriate action.
NOTE: We will not discuss the outcome of such investigations as the matter is considered to be a private affair between the Moderator/Admin and the 'offender'. Requests for details on what we decided will be politely declined.
Do NOT post links in chat - even 'broken' links eg startxchange . com or StartXchangeDOTcom If you really need to send a link, ask the member for permission to PM them the link.

All conversations are logged and archived and may be read by an administrator or moderator without your consent at any time, and will be used to detirmine if the TOS has been broken when necessary. Members not following these rules may find their access to the forum, PM system, and chat revoked. Repeated offenses / serious breaches will result account suspension and/or permanent banning.

Richard, you might want to mention this post in chat. Seems to have become an
d advertising agency and house of solitation for new team members.I could be insulting to a chat member to be addressed by whatever nickname the speaker wants to give them. It's bad when they are given a man's nickname when it's a lady. It's also bad when you turn on chat and feel like you're intruding on a 2 way CB conversation. When we say wtg to 1 for encouragement some are playing 1 upmanship to show they're better. Maybe not intentional but this does happen daily for the last couple of weeks.

Whoopi;

I agree with you. Some of it seems to be getting worst.

I'm confused Mary, if only 2 people are active in chat are they supposed to be quiet cause no one else wants to talk??
anyone can join in or start a new convo or just post their progress if that's all they want to do.
As for Nicknames I usually use the first part of their username till they tell me their real name or what they would like to be called...most are very nice about calling people what they want to be known by.
There has been some Team promoting by new members who are excited by their new team & want to shout about it, but I believe the Team Leader should be the one to rein them in not have them banned or something by the Mods.
just my own humble opinion :)

As with all things, I use my discretion :)

I do allow for 'enthusiasm' but equally, as many members will know, I do not let enthusiasm over-ride following the rules - most members understand and accept if I give a gentle nudge that they are straying over the line, and this is how we would like it to be. We are here not to be killjoys, but to ensure everyone has the chance to enjoy the same opportunity to chat and relax whilst surfing.

If people do push the boundaries, and will not accept a gentle reminder, we do have more severe means of ensuring their compliance :)

I find the chat helpful for many reasons. Sometimes it is busier than others and sometimes conversations are already started. i agree with Patti. To me it is like entering a room. Sometimes people are already engrossed in a conversation so I do not expect them to just drop everything to talk to me. An acknowledgment is sufficient.

Chat can be a bit difficult if you have 5 sites open and you are going from one tab to another. If I do use the chat facility then I restrict it to one site then move to the other tabs and when I come back then hopefully I have received a reply

I definitely need to bookmark this one. It is a great resources for 'reminding' (or, nudging as you say) people how to behave properly.

There is plenty of opportunity for promotion within the site so, people have no excuse for these grey/black hat techniques.

I have to agree with Shelayne. I do not expect them to just drop everything to talk to me. An acknowledgment is sufficient.
I am glad to see the rules posted on this forum.
